West Dunbartonshire Council is encouraging residents to get out and use their vote in the upcoming European elections.

On 23 May, residents will be able to have their say on which six candidates they want to represent them in the European Parliament.

Election officials are also reminding residents to check the details on their polling cards as their polling station may have changed.

Residents who previously cast their vote at Gavinburn Primary School in Old Kilpatrick will now go to Napier Hall.

Similarly, those who previously voted in Alexandria Parish Church will now vote in St Kessog’s Church Hall.

Residents do not need to take their polling card along with them on the day.

Joyce White, Local Returning Officer, said: “I would urge everyone to check their polling card now to ensure they are clear on where they have to go to cast their vote.

“Knowing this information will reduce any confusion on the day, especially for those who may be going somewhere different from previous elections.

“The European Parliament makes many decisions which affect the people of West Dunbartonshire so it’s important to have your voice heard by using your vote to decide who represents you.

“The polls are open between 7am and 10pm so please take the time to use your vote on 23 May.”

In the European election, each party puts forward a list of candidates – known as a regional list. This list has been published on the Council website. West Dunbartonshire is part of the Electoral Region of Scotland.

On the day of the election, residents will be asked to place a single X beside the political party or independent candidate of their choice.

The number of MEPs that are elected from each party to represent a region depends on the overall share of votes that each party receives.

Those elected will vote on residents’ behalf on a range of important issues including workers’ rights, consumer rights, asylum and immigration, animal rights and the environment.

Following the close of the polls, votes will be counted on Sunday 26 May. A local total for West Dunbartonshire will be announced that evening with national results announced the following day.
