About the Modern Apprenticeships Programme
The Modern Apprenticeships Programme helps you to work towards a Modern Apprenticeship (MA). These are designed to give you the skills and knowledge to do a real job with real responsibilities.
It also allows the apprentice to develop a range of 'soft' skills including communication, numeracy, IT, teamwork and problem solving which are all invaluable to any employer.
The Council offers a wide range of areas to undertake apprenticeships and these include:
- Business and Administration
- Health and Social Care
- Construction Craft (roofer, painter, joiner, plumber, electrician)
- Construction Technical (Civil Engineering)
- Automotive (Mechanic)
- Health and Safety
- Contact Centre Professional
- Youth Work
How do they work/how long do they last?
A Modern Apprentice employed by West Dunbartonshire Council is treated like any other employee and has the same terms and conditions. In addition to this, you will be offered training. This allows you to achieve a level 2 or 3 Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) / Modern Apprenticeship (MA).
A supervisor works with you to develop key skills such as working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology.
Study at a Further Education college, which gives you more technical knowledge and understanding of the job.
How long do Apprenticeships last?
A Level 2 Modern Apprenticeship takes approximately nine months with the exception of roads, which takes eighteen months. Level 2 apprenticeships are open to 18-24 year olds claiming Job seekers allowance and are advertised through the Jobcentre.
A Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship takes between 2 - 4 years to complete depending on the vocational area.
