About the Modern Apprenticeships Programme

With a Modern Apprenticeship you learn on the job, and get the experience you need while you work towards an industry recognised qualification.  This means that MAs can build valuable work experience from day one and gain an accredited qualification. These are designed to give you the skills and knowledge to do a real job with real responsibilities.  You’ll develop skills and expertise for your current and future jobs including communication, numeracy, IT, teamwork and problem solving which are all invaluable to any employer.

Modern Apprenticeships are open to young people aged 16-24 years or up to 29 years if you have a disability or are care experienced.

Modern Apprenticeships help employers to develop their workforce by training new staff, and upskilling existing employees.

The Council offers a wide range of areas to undertake apprenticeships and these include:

  • Automotive (Mechanic)
  • Business and Administration
  • Childcare
  • Construction Craft (roofer, painter, joiner, plumber, electrician)
  • Construction Technical (Civil Engineering)
  • Health and Safety
  • Health and Social Care
  • Horticulture
  • Hospitality
  • Leisure
  • Procurement
  • Youth Work

How do they work?

A Modern Apprentice employed by West Dunbartonshire Council is treated like any other employee and has the same terms and conditions.  In addition to this, you will be offered training. This allows you to achieve a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at SCQF level 5, 6 or 7 depending on the vocational area and Modern Apprenticeship Framework Enhancement requirements.   You are supported by an Assessor to gather the evidence needed to achieve your SVQ as you work.

On-the-Job

A supervisor works with you to develop key skills such as working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology.

Off-the-Job

You may access off the job training at a Further Education college or other training provider which gives you more technical knowledge and understanding of the job.  This is dependent on the vocational area and level.

How long do Apprenticeships last?

Some Modern Apprentices can be achieved within 9 months others take up to 4 years depending on the vocational area and level of the qualification.
