Oral History Volunteers

WDC's Heritage Team are looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to capture stories and memories about Singer sewing machines from visitors to Clydebank Museum & Art Galley.

Do you love listening to people’s stories? Do you relish the opportunity to spend ages listening to someone talk about their past? Would you like to learn techniques about gathering oral histories and sharing stories?

This volunteering opportunity is mainly based in Clydebank Town Hall with some outreach around Clydebank. Your induction includes a tour of the Town Hall, Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery and background about the Sewing Machine Collection and Singer Archive. You will receive training sessions on oral history and then encourage visitors to share their stories of Singer at our pop-up memories booth at a regular weekly time(s) that suits you. This may be captured in writing, conversation and/or recorded digitally.

Your work will be on display at the finale event in May 2018 where you will be invited to the launch event and a special volunteer event for you, your friends and family where you can meet other volunteers.

For this role, we are looking for a people person - someone who is comfortable engaging with the public; someone personable who enjoys a natter but is also a good listener. It helps if you have a flair with technology – if you’ve got experience using microphones and camcorders that’s great, but if not, we can teach you those skills.

All training will be provided, no museum experience or Singer knowledge necessary.

Role Details

LENGTH: Flexible – from 8 weeks to 7 months (plus event in May 2018)

HOURS: 3 hours per week

DATES: Flexible from August 2017 – March 2018

WHERE: Clydebank Town Hall (accessible by public transport)

Digitization Volunteers

WDC's Heritage Team are looking for volunteers to help digitize photographs from the Sewing Machine Collection & Singer Archive and transcribe oral history interviews with Singer Clydebank employees.

Do you love being on your computer? Are you fascinated by local history and care about the small details? Are you interested in a career in museums or archives and looking to develop your skills and experience?

This volunteering opportunity is based in Dumbarton where you will be digitizing photographs from the Singer Archive and preparing transcripts of oral history interviews conducted with Singer employees. Your induction includes a tour of the Sewing Machine Collection and Singer Archive and you will receive training using museum collections software to learn how to digitise and archive digital images to museum standards. You will work in pairs in our dedicated Volunteer Room to learn both technical and practical skills including handling museum objects.

Your work will be on display at the finale event in May 2018 where you will be invited to the launch event and a special volunteer event for you, your friends and family where you can meet other volunteers.

This role would be ideal for someone looking for employment experience or wants to work with museum collections in their future career. We are looking for someone with good concentration, who is IT literate and has great attention to detail.

All training will be provided, no museum experience or Singer knowledge necessary.
