Alexandria town centre is located a few miles south of Loch Lomond and to the west of the River Leven. It operates as a local centre for the surrounding Vale of Leven population (25,000).

A major project in Alexandria in recent years has been the refurbishment of Mitchell Way. The first two phases of the refurbishment project involved removing dated canopies, installing new lighting, shutters, signage and carrying out essential repairs. A further phase was completed in late 2014 involving improvements to the Main Street entrance to create better links between shopping areas and enhancing the public space. The new public space incorporates a public art feature designed by local school children, new lighting, seating and trees.

A preferred developer, CCG Scotland/Kingsmead Developments, was approved in 2016 to take forward the redevelopment of the remainder of Mitchell Way subject to planning permission being granted and site investigations being completed. Current Plans are for the development of a foodstore with 145 car parking spaces, a three storey development of both retail and residential units and the demolition of the existing units at 30 to 40 Mitchell Way.
