Connecting Dumbarton is a project focused on creating a welcoming gateway into the town centre from Dumbarton Central Station and enhancing active travel connections. It also forms part of the wider long-term “Railway to Rock” connectivity aspiration to create an attractive active travel route between Dumbarton Central Station and the Rock and Castle via the High Street, and the waterfront path. It is the first of the Levelling Up projects to be delivered, being completed in early 2024.
The project delivered a high-quality public realm along Station Road and College Street/College Way. The connection into the town centre, along College Street, has been strengthened and better defined. It is part the well-used National Cycle Network (NCN 7), linking Glasgow with Loch Lomond. Pavements have been widened and the crossing point at Station Road enhanced to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists. Connecting Dumbarton has created a much more attractive, safer and user-friendly route for pedestrians and cyclists to approach the town centre and its waterfront and explore what the town has to offer. It has also created a better setting for the listed Dumbarton Central Station and Municipal Buildings.
