Residents holding accounts with Clydebank Municipal Bank are being encouraged to contact the bank ahead of its planned closure at the end of the month.

The bank will permanently close on Friday, 31 March 2023 and while a large number of account holders have already contacted the bank and made alternative banking arrangements there is still a significant number of live accounts.

The remaining account holders should contact the bank as a matter of urgency to close their account and change standing orders paid into, or from, their Municipal Bank accounts to ensure they are made to alternative banks.

The bank still has more than 1,500 live accounts. Money in accounts not closed by 31 March 2023 will be secured in a designated bank account and customers will be able to submit an application for payment of unclaimed balances after the bank has closed.

Councillor Daniel Lennie, Convener of Corporate Services, said: “I would urge account holders to get in touch before the end of the month to close their account. We’ve had a good response from customers but despite receiving two letters and reminder messages shared on our social media with information calling on residents to take action, we still have a significant number of customers who have not contacted us to close their account.

“People with accounts not only have savings, but also have other payments and payments made to other parties linked to their accounts. It is therefore vital they make contact as soon as possible to close their accounts and put alternative banking arrangements in place.”

Councillor Michelle McGinty, Vice Convener of Corporate Services, said: “I would encourage people to check with friends and family to see if they have an account, even if they haven’t used it in a while, they still need to contact us and close their account. The process is very straight forward and our employees are available to help, so if you or a family member has an account, please contact us now.”
