Provost marks Holocaust Memorial Day with flag-raising ceremony
The ceremony, held at Solidarity Plaza in Clydebank on Saturday 27 January, was among millions of events held worldwide to remember the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides.
The international day is held every year on 27 January coinciding with the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
Provost McAllister was joined at the ceremony by President Timothy Lovat, President of the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, along with Deputy Lord Lieutenant’s Gill Aitkenhead, Mauren Cummings and Owen Sayers, Jackie Baillie MSP and members of West Dunbartonshire Council.
Provost McAllister said: "Today, we remember those who lost their lives because of hatred and intolerance and we are reminded that we as human beings should do all we can to ensure these acts of violence do not continue to happen to innocent people.”
