West Dunbartonshire’s libraries have secured funding for projects to tackle child poverty and digital exclusion.
The Libraries Empower Connections project, developed by libraries staff, has been awarded £11,575 and is one of thirteen initiatives across Scotland awarded a share of £200,000 from the Public Library Improvement Fund (PLIF).
Administered by Scottish Library & Information Council (SLIC) on behalf of the Scottish Government, the fund supports initiatives designed to inspire engagement across areas such as digital upskilling, sustainability and inclusivity
The Libraries Empower Connections project will help communities to develop their digital skills with devices and a new informal digital programme incorporating a range of digital activities on offer across branches. The sessions will help support individuals to use technology to access to Council services and support available to them, ensuring residents gain what they are entitled to including benefits.
Sessions will be available in libraries from February, with speakers from services such as Working4U, school catering and many more.
Councillor William Rooney, Convener of Corporate Services, said: "This is an opportunity for anyone, regardless of age, who isn't confident using computers or devices such as iPads to come into our libraries and learn skills that will enable digital access to Council and other services and also aid them in their day-to-day life through accessing online communication tools. The libraries team is always looking for ways to enhance the offer provided in branches through programmes and initiatives and this is the latest example of their efforts."
