Road safety around all schools in West Dunbartonshire is being strengthened with upgraded and refreshed road markings and signage.
Enhancements will include a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order along the A813 at Balloch Campus and permanent 20mph signage and road markings installed at Dalreoch Primary School, replacing advisory signs.
The action follows a full review by the Council’s Roads and Neighbourhood Services of the current 20mph policy around primary schools to ensure consistency, particularly at co-located and relocated schools.
The Capital Funding Requirement was confirmed at last week’s Council meeting when the budget was approved for the coming year.
As well as strengthening road safety around schools, enforcing a 20mph limit is also hoped to encourage more active travel which supports health, wellbeing and sustainability.
The new restrictions at Balloch Campus will be in place for the start of term in August 2025 and will include the installation of mandatory 20mph signage and road markings.
Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor David McBride said: “We are absolutely committed to ensuring safety for people travelling to and from school and want to encourage pedestrians and motorists to be safe and sensible near to schools.
“I am particularly pleased that attention is being given to a Traffic Regulation Order at Balloch Campus which will help promote safety around this area and that permanent 20mph signage and road markings will be put in place at Dalreoch Primary School.”
Vice Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor Lawrence O’Neill added: “Everyone travelling to and from school should be allowed to do so in safety and this commitment will help to bolster that.
“I want to thank the officers involved in carrying out this review. I look forward to seeing this progress and the benefits to all of our school communities as a result of the work.”
