Until her death in September 1971, Frances McBeth (née Abbott) was said to have been the last surviving participant in the 1911 Singer strike. Frances was a Clydebank girl and joined Singer's Cabinet Polishing Department straight from school. A life-long socialist and sometimes described as the "mother" or "duchess" of the Clydebank Labour Party, she worked closely with MPs Davie Kirkwood and Cyril Bence and looked after the old Labour Party Rooms in Dumbarton Road for almost fifty years. In addition, she was a founder member of the Socialist Sunday School in the town and one of the founders of the Socialist Camp at Carbeth in 1926.
