The common lands of Dumbarton ("The Common") were, once used for common grazing. Adjacent to the north-eastern boundary of these lands, it would appear, a small compound, or pound, containing a "fauld" or fold for stray cattle was situated. This became known as "Poindfauld". Poindfauld was later the name of a street that connected The Common with Bonhill Road.
Poindfauld Terrace stood on the northern side of Poindfauld. Modern houses now stand on the site.
This avenue in Drumry is named after the famous Queen Mary ocean liner built in the 1930s at John Brown's shipyard in nearby Clydebank. This world-famous ship still survives as a hotel moored at Long Beach, Los Angeles, California.
