Support services for children and young people so they can achieve.

Curriculum for Excellence says that:

Every child and young person is entitled to personal support to enable them to gain as much as possible from the opportunities which Curriculum for Excellence can provide.

We provide personal support to children and young people based on one or more of the following:

  • approaches to learning and teaching
  • support from staff.

Personal support is provided in two ways - as universal or as targeted support. The Collaborative Support Services provides targeted support to children and young people.

Collaborative Support Services

The role of the Collaborative Support Services (CSS) is to support the educational attainment and achievement of children identified as having additional support needs and requiring targeted support.

This may include:

  • able pupils
  • autism spectrum disorders
  • behaviour support
  • English as an additional language
  • highly dependent learners
  • physical impairments
  • interrupted learners
  • children who are 'looked after' either in their home or away from home, e.g. foster home, residential school.
  • Gypsy / Traveller / Roma children and young people whose family lifestyle often leads to interruptions in their school based learning. Your child can be supported twice a week using e-learning on the Y Sort It bus at the Dennystown Forge site, or in a local library for intensive support for national qualifications.

Find more information on the Scottish Traveller Education Programme (STEP).

  • Interrupted Learners, who are children who have breaks in their school learning for a variety of reasons, e.g. phobia, ill health or pregnancy. Your child can have support directly from a teacher or through the use of e-learning.

Looked after children

Children and young people can be looked after at home or away from home. These children are some of our most vulnerable and have specific additional support needs.
