Council Tax bills include charges made by Scottish Water for water and sewerage services. The Council is required by law to collect these charges on behalf of Scottish Water.
The charges for water and sewerage are set each year by Scottish Water and are subject to scrutiny by the Water Industry Commissioner for Scotland and the Scottish Government.
If you receive exemption from the Council Tax charge you will also be exempt for the water and sewerage charges on your property for the corresponding period.
Households with two or more adults that receive Council Tax Reduction and not already receiving a discount, qualify for a reduction in water and sewerage charge. The level of reduction is directly linked to entitlement to Council Tax Reduction up to a maximum reduction of 25%. Only full entitlement to Council Tax Reduction attracts the full 25% reduction from the water and sewerage charge. This reduction is automatic and no application is necessary.
If you have a septic tank or a private water supply, you may be eligible for a reduction in your water and sewerage charges.
On the Council Tax bills the total charge is itemised into 3 separate amounts - Water, Sewerage and Council Tax. It will then also detail any Council Tax Reduction award, discount, exemption and Water and Sewerage reduction and resident will be asked to pay the remainder.
